Poveglia University Island
Client: (Competition)
Type: Education
Location: Venice, Italy
Intent: The project as an evolution of historically significant programs and uses, offered a dynamic platform for a University Campus. The design establishes itself as a perfect balance between respecting the past yet pushing Poveglia properly to the future. A field of objects bound together through a network of pathways embedded in the natural landscape, ensues from the original anti-urbanistic master plan, completing the needs and uses, enhancing the serene island just west of Venice.
The interconnected character of the campus creates forms without a back side introducing a vibrant network of pathways, embedded in a natural landscape with smartly planned topography surrounded with water and open areas, wild and elegant vegetation, bridges and trees, plazas and buildings. Nature and architecture communicate here in a complementary way - the green space assuming a leading role. Zones are created through the proper use of the existing historical fabric overlapped, joining and touching the newly designed structures of academia, housing, entertainment and the arts.
The architectural concept is based on the already existing landscape and historical structures, balancing natural landscape, the re-purposed with a new architectural design language that establishes University Island into a campus hat is resilient and future proof.
